I can learn more about a fountain pen from a page of writing than from a long list of specifications. Weight matters, but so does where that weight sits. Nib width matters, but only in relation to ink, paper and the speed of the hand.
Balance before luxury
A good pen settles into the hand without needing to be gripped tightly. Some achieve this through very low weight, others through careful distribution between section and barrel. Posting the cap may improve one pen and spoil another. There is no universal number that replaces trying it.
The section should guide the fingers without forcing them into a single position. Threads and trim should stay out of the way. These are ordinary details, but they decide whether I reach for a pen during a long letter or return it to the drawer after two lines.
The nib on paper
I look for reliable flow first. Character comes after. A little softness can make the line feel alive, but flexibility is not automatically better, and scratchiness is not evidence of personality. The nib should suit the pressure and angle of the person using it.
Paper changes the result as much as the pen. An absorbent sheet broadens the line; a hard smooth surface can make a fine nib feel glassy. I test with the paper I actually use instead of trying to find an abstract ideal.
The pleasure of maintenance
Filling and cleaning are part of the attraction. A piston, lever or pressure bar makes ink visible as something carried and replenished. The mechanism asks for occasional attention, but in return it can often be understood and repaired.
The pens I keep are not necessarily the rarest. They are the ones that start without complaint, remain comfortable and develop familiarity through use. A good fountain pen does not make writing important. It simply removes enough friction for the words to continue.
