The object

I think of this René Herse as a complete travelling system rather than a frame with accessories. Racks, mudguards, lighting, luggage and controls were considered together, so nothing feels like an apology added after the bicycle was finished.

The low front load keeps a map, food and a camera within reach while the steering remains composed. Wide gearing and supple tyres make sense on long climbs and imperfect roads. The bicycle feels light because its parts cooperate, not because usefulness has been stripped away.

The sage paint is chipped, the saddle has shaped itself through use and polished contact points reveal years of travel. Bearings, cables, tyres and braking surfaces have received the work required for safe riding. Original fittings remain wherever they continue to do their job.

Why I keep it

I keep the René Herse because it makes utility elegant through integration. Its beauty becomes clearest when it is loaded, moving and carrying someone toward a place beyond the day’s starting point.

Provenance

French family ownership, later held in a Geneva cycling collection; acquired by In Use Since in 2024.

Acquisition notes

Selected for the integration of frame and equipment rather than decorative rarity. Mechanical work was limited to safe riding and dependable luggage carrying.
