The object

I like this radio because there is almost nothing to explain. The grille tells me where the sound comes from, the large dial invites tuning and the smaller control sets the volume. The rounded cream housing makes the object approachable without hiding that it is a piece of electronic equipment.

The controls matter as much as the appearance. Both offer deliberate resistance, so finding a station feels precise rather than vague. At ordinary room volume the radio has the intimate scale of an object made for a kitchen, desk or bedside rather than for filling a house.

The case carries light domestic wear and a gentle change in colour. Internally, the aim was stable, safe operation, not wholesale replacement. Components were checked and work was kept to what the radio required. I prefer the small signs of age to a refinished shell that would separate it from the rooms in which it was used.

Why I keep it

I keep the Braun because it gives a complicated technology a calm, readable face. It is friendly without being decorative and precise without looking technical for its own sake.

Provenance

Found in Switzerland; earlier domestic ownership is not documented.
